Second Rwanda Gorilla Reservation
Gorilla trekking is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that provides primate lovers the opportunity to track and spend time with the Giant Apes in their natural habitat. This life-changing experience can be enjoyed from Volcanoes National Park, where over 12 gorilla families have been habituated fully for tracking by visitors who are of age (15 years and above). The chance to visit these endangered primates and the opportunity to spend even one hour learning about their extraordinary human-like behavior is second to none. Book Now
However, enjoying a second Rwanda Gorilla Trek is possible for travelers who can’t have enough of these Giant Apes, and this not only provides more time but also makes it possible to visit a different gorilla family with different history, group composition, size, and home range.
What are the second Rwanda Gorilla Treks about?
The second gorilla treks is about visiting the endangered mountain gorillas twice in a single Rwanda Gorilla safari. For your typical gorilla trekking adventure, expect to visit one of the 12 habituated gorilla families and this usually climaxes with spending one-hour taking photos and learning about the remarkable behavior of these Giant Apes. This is usually not enough for any photographer or gorilla lover, but with the option of a second Gorilla trek, travelers are offered the opportunity to enter the forest another day, most times visiting a different gorilla family from the one visited the previous day.
More time with the mountain gorillas means more photos and unforgettable experiences. In so doing, a minimum of 4 days will be required to enjoy the best of your time. The first day is for transferring from Kigali to Volcanoes National Park, while the second and third days are for relishing your gorilla trekking experiences, and the fourth/last day for returning back to Kigali.
What is required to enjoy second/double Rwanda Gorilla Treks?
Nothing special is required to enjoy your second Rwanda Gorilla trek, hence no need to worry about not fulfilling any requirements. The most important requirement to fulfil is to purchase double gorilla permits for two different days, for your trip. A permit in Rwanda currently costs only $1500 per person per day, and for the double gorilla trek, you will need to part with $3000 per person and make sure that they are of different dates.
Best time to enjoy the second Rwanda Gorilla Treks
Travelers can enjoy the second Rwanda Gorilla Treks all year round. However, the months of June to September and December to February are the driest months for gorilla trekking adventures. These are considered the perfect months for enjoying gorilla treks (whether once or twice) in Volcanoes National Park, as rainfall levels recede and the forest trails are less muddy or slippery. These months are therefore the peak season hence demand for gorilla permits is higher than usual. For this reason, we advise travelers interested in enjoying the second Rwanda Gorilla Treks to book at least 6-12 months in advance to get the dates you are interested in.
During the wet months- March to May and October to November are marked by increased rainfall levels which make forest trails muddy and more slippery. Many visitors avoid these months hence they are part of the low season for gorilla treks. However, the demand for gorilla permits is lower during these months, and more importantly, many Lodges offer discounted accommodation rates hence making it possible to save more money during your Rwanda Gorilla safari.
